Amazon uses billions of pounds of plastic packaging waste in the United States annually. The environmental organization Oceana points out that if all this plastic were connected end-to-end, the total length would be enough to wrap around the Earth more than 200 times.
To reduce plastic waste, Amazon recently announced that it will stop using plastic bubble wrap and instead adopt recyclable paper as packaging material. Currently, Amazon has achieved a conversion from plastic to paper packaging in 95% of its North American operations and plans to complete this full transition by the end of the year.
Pat Lindner, head of Amazon's sustainable packaging division, stated that this change is expected to reduce the use of nearly 15 billion plastic bubble wraps annually, representing a significant plastic reduction initiative in North America.
Amazon notes that using recycled paper as filler not only effectively protects products but, in some cases, its protective performance is even superior to that of plastic bubble wrap.
